In her rise to global DJ A-Lister, Anna Lunoe has proven a tough contender. Amidst a boy’s club of superstar spinners, she remains true to herself, yet always rocks the crowd. As audiences from Coachella to Ibiza have learned, Anna Lunoe has a story to tell that she shares through house music, one that’s immediate, accessible, soulful, with a lot of depth – & all her.
Lunoe consistently delivers surprises that transcend EDM clichés – from the tracks she drops on the decks & in her Luney Tunes live podcasts to her own productions & remixes. Over numerous releases, she’s proven a multidimensional artist on a timeless tip. Lunoe’s influences & individualism reveals itself on Lunoe’s recent EP release, All Out (Ultra) which debuted Top 5 on the iTunes Dance Chart: one standout, “Say It Again,” hotwires classic house/garage grooves with contemporary production, while another, “Heartbreak In Motion,” flavors vintage Detroit techno vibes with modern low-end theory. Lunoe stands apart in her ability to merge hardcore club tracks with smart pop: All Out’s title track nails that perfect balance of big-room banger & potential radio hit– highlighted by sexy, playful vocal hooks sung by Lunoe herself. Indeed, she’s as much a performer/songwriter as she is DJ/producer.
It was Lunoe’s DJ sets, meanwhile, that propelled her from stardom in her native Australia to international headliner status, spanning appearances from underground clubs to tastemaker festivals Lollapalooza, Ultra, TomorrowWorld, & Hard. In addition to solo appearances, Lunoe’s done support slots for Disclosure, Duke Dumont, Flume, The Weeknd, Banks, TEED, Clockwork, and Diplo, toured US and Europe with KYGO and most recently invited to play with Gorgon City. What allows her to in front of such diverse crowds is that she’s a true selector, with her own distinctive, intuitive approach to flipping different styles – from electro to hip-hop & contemporary bass culture – into her unique, house-driven style. “It’s about finding emotional connections between genres,” Lunoe says. “I push the crowd as far as I can, & then reward them.”
Lunoe’s sonic versatility stems from her rapid and unexpected rise up the DJ ranks. Starting out in broadcasting, she developed her skills spinning anthems from the likes Van She, Cut Copy, & The Presets on a local Sydney tastemaker radio station during the height of 2000s indie-dance mania. After DJing a couple art gallery openings, she was opening slots for groundbreaking artists like Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, Lupe Fiasco, & Calvin Harris. “When I first started, my dream was to support M.I.A.,” Lunoe recalls. “Then six months later, I was!” A headlining fixture at Australia’s top clubs & festivals in no time, Lunoe became the first female to mix an Australian Ministry of Sound compilation – her first of three, all of which went gold. Soon Lunoe was curating fashion shows and hosting TV segments; Harper’s Bazaar even included her on a list of “Sydney’s 100 Most Influential People.” After a half-decade of regional success, however, Lunoe craved new challenges. 2 years ago, she moved to Los Angeles, California, hooking up with influential booking powerhouse William Morris Endeavor just as dance music began dominating pop culture in America, and the world, like never before. Lunoe began releasing original productions on club music-defining labels like Fool’s Gold, Future Classic, Fjordin, & now Ultra: she scored her first Beatport #1 with “Real Talk” (a collaboration with Aussie DJ/producer Touch Sensitive) & “I Met You” (with breakout sensation Flume) off 2013’s Anna Lunoe & Friends EP.
Lunoe first started creating original electronic music after being approached to provide music for fashion shows for Chanel, Prada, & Louis Vuitton (she’s since become something of an inadvertent style icon – you’re as likely to see Lunoe in Style.com, V Magazine, or Interview as you are Resident Advisor, & she recently performed at Teen Vogue’s “Young Hollywood” event). “Through that, I really got to explore & define my own production style,” she says. Since then,
Lunoe has work with a “who’s who” of dance music royalty. Skrillex put out Lunoe’s Bass Drum Dealer (B.D.D.) EP on his Nest imprint & graced it with some additional production; she’s also collaborated with Flume, AC Slater, Alex Metric, Yuksek, Treasure Fingers, & most recently TEED on the critically acclaimed underground hit “Feels Like.”
Despite her achievements, Lunoe’s only just begun to show far she can go with her multimedia talents & charisma. “Now people are coming to hear me spin to hear my songs – they’re the biggest tracks in my set,” she says. “I’m an unusual product, so I really appreciate that opportunity to keep exploring the spectrum of what I can do.” As such, anything is possible as Anna continues to push forward the stylish, unpredictable, & aspirational with integrity. As Lunoe herself sings in the chorus of her explosive dance floor smash, “Bass Drum Dealer,” “I’m your high-heeled killer, midnight thriller, I’m your bass drum dealer – & I always deliver.”
